Facts about SIMHACHALAM
Here are 10 interesting facts about Simhachalam Temple in Vizag 👇
1. The deity is always covered in sandalwood paste
Lord Varaha Narasimha is covered with chandanam year-round. You only see the original form once a year on Akshaya Tritiya. That day is called Chandana Yatra. The rest of the year, he looks like a Shiva lingam.
2. No one knows what the idol actually looks like
The original idol under the sandalwood is never photographed or shown publicly. Even the priests only see it for a few hours during Nijaroopa Darshanam.
3. It’s a mix of two avatars
Simhachalam is unique because the deity combines Varaha + Narasimha avatars. Boar face, lion body, human torso. You won’t find this combo anywhere else.
4. The architecture is a Chola + Chalukya + Kalinga mashup
Built in 11th century by Cholas, renovated by Eastern Gangas. The temple has 16-pillared Natya Mandapa with incredible stone carvings. UNESCO-worthy but underrated.
5. The temple tank never dries up
Gangadhara tank on the hill is considered sacred. Locals believe the water comes from an underground spring connected to River Ganga. It stays full even in peak summer.
6. The hill itself is shaped like a lion
From a distance, Simhachalam hill looks like a lion resting. Simha = lion, Achalam = hill. Name literally means “Lion’s Hill”.
7. Kings fought to control it
Krishnadevaraya, Chalukyas, and even the Dutch tried to control Simhachalam because of its wealth. The temple once owned entire villages as land grants.
8. The steps are numbered... but disputed
Pilgrims climb ∼1000 steps from the foothills. Exact count varies because some say counting them brings bad luck. APSRTC buses go up now, but walking is still popular during festivals.
9. No electricity near the sanctum
Even today, the garbha griha uses only oil lamps. The belief is Narasimha’s ugra form is too intense for artificial light.
10. The annual sandalwood used weighs 300+ kg
Every Akshaya Tritiya, old sandalwood is removed and fresh paste is applied. It takes ∼12 hours and ∼320 kg of chandanam to cover the idol again for the year.
Planning to visit? Go during Chandana Yatra in April/May if you want to see the real idol. Rest of the year, you get blessings + sandalwood prasadam.
